Buckmans joins in Haiti Relief

April 2010

Recently Buckmans.com had the opportunity to provide local assistance to residents donating to Haiti relief through Mishock Physical Therapy & Associates.

According to the Pottstown Mercury’s website:

“Dr. John Mishock of Mishock Physical Therapy came up with the idea to start a collection of crutches, walkers, wheelchairs and any other items that his patients and others may have sitting in their attics or basements. Mishock said the items would likely prove useful for many Haitians who have sustained injuries in the earthquakes.
"Many of our patients who we see orthopedically, they have a procedure done and then ... these things (crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.,) are out in the community and they're seldom used again."

Mishock has already collected several dozen items and hopes to collect as many more as people are willing to part with.

"It's stuff that's really significant, we just take that for granted," Mishock said of the items that enable us to be mobile even when we are injured. "I wanted to try to use something that we have at our access, and it might be the walker you have in the attic. I wanted to take something unused in our lives and make it something significant in someone else's life…

Mishock said the items he has collected will be sent to Haiti through a mission church group connection. He said he will keep the collection going indefinitely if there is a response from the community and a continued demand from those in Haiti.

"We are very fortunate and you if think about it, if you need a walker, you just run down to the pharmacy and get that," Mishock said. "A lot of what has happened, a lot of the crush injuries have gotten infected, and there's going to be a significant number of amputees. What it's going to mean (for someone who receives a donated walker, wheelchair, cane or crutches) is function and mobility. It's really just function and mobility and in turn hopefully is going to lead to better quality of life." "

Buckmans.com was proud to participate in this opportunity by providing the trucking needed to transport the donated goods from the drop off locations to the mission group.
