"We have a full Winter 2012-2013 outlook done ... but I wanted to draw more specific month to month and week to week attention to the month of December. Meteorological Winter begins on December 1st, and officially the Winter Solstice is December 21st, but this is the month we realistically look for Winter storms and cold to start to invade our region.
By early estimates, we thought December would be the transition month, and get progressively worse as Winter rolls on. That STILL remains my standpoint, and there is nothing out there that really screams at me saying that original idea was incorrect. When making Winter forecasts as a whole, we like to consider analogs. Analogs are simply past years’ data that resembled the current set-up from this year. This will most likely end up an ENSO neutral or slightly weak El Nino year, based on the latest guidance and observations..."
